When you become pregnant, one of your most curious things is what you will encounter and discuss with your doctor. The first examination in pregnancy is one of the most important examinations of gynecologists and obstetricians in our country.
Since women who have regular check-ups usually talk to their doctor about pregnancy, this examination will of course take a short time. Since most of the women in our country do not go to the examination before they become pregnant, a detailed examination is carried out at the first visit.
What conditions are taken into consideration in the first doctor examination in pregnancy?
Our first expectation as a doctor is to listen to the patient’s entire medical history, especially the gynecological history of the patient. We use them to determine if there are any problems that may trigger birth.
We then proceed to question the patient’s menstrual periods. One of the most common questions you will hear during your entire pregnancy is what is your last menstrual period. My advice to every woman who plans to get pregnant is that she must record the first day of her last menstrual date on a calendar or phone. In women with menstrual irregularities, it may be difficult to determine when ovulation occurs and it may be difficult to determine when the pregnancy occured. Therefore, there may be a difference between the week of gestation and the week that is calculated with the baby’s measurements.
In addition, if you have used it, we will also question your last birth control method as sometimes we see patients who become pregnant while using a contraceptive method.
Whether you were pregnant before and whether you have an abortion are the problems that may arise during pregnancy and they are the points that we want to know in order to detect some problems early. Please do not hide this information from your physician.
Likewise, whether you have had previous surgery is important to detect problems that you migh have during pregnancy. Or if you decide to have a caesarean section this information will help us to be prepared for problems that may occur during cesarean section.
Some women may be on medication during pregnancy. Drugs used during pregnancy can sometimes cause structural or developmental problems for your baby. Therefore, you must tell your doctor which medications you use.
In addition, it is very important to mention the problems you have experienced in your previous pregnancy in order to identify the problems that may occur in the second pregnancy.
If you have a disease that is continuously monitored (diabetes, epilepsy, etc.), it will help your doctor to better monitor the disease for pregnancy.
Is vaginal examination performed in the first examination?
As for the examination section;
In this part, many of my colleagues, including myself, are having trouble. Unless otherwise specified by the PHYSICIANS, vaginal examination is not a problem during pregnancy. I care about this part because pregnant women colsulting for bleeding problem do not want to have a vaginal examination. In this case, it is not possible to determine your medical condition correctly.
DON’T FORGET THAT VISITING AN OBSTETRİCİAN AND GYNECOLOGİST AND NOT ACCEPTING VAGINAL EXAMINATION IS QUITE SIMILAR TO GOING TO A DENTIST AND NOT OPENING YOUR MOUTH.
We mentioned that many of the womens’ first gynecological examinations in Turkey occurs when they get pregnant. In this case, you might take the test for cervical cancer screening smear called, cervix which is carried out with a brush from your cervix. There is no harm in taking this swab sample.
At the end of the examination, some blood and urine tests will be requested at the first visit. In addition to assays to determine blood type, you will also be asked to take tests to determine whether past vaccinations (measles, chicken pox, hepatitis, etc.) still provide protection. Assays that measure immunity to diseases such as HIV, toxoplasma, mumps can also be performed with the same blood sample. Some of these diseases cause serious problems when passed to the baby so it is useful to do.
Do I get a vaginal examination every time I see a doctor?
No. Your doctor will recommend a vaginal examination if you have bleeding, water or pain. In addition, your baby will be checked by abdominal ultrasound.
In addition, at the end of your examination, you should determine at what times and through which channel you will contact your physician. I will also mention the special examinations in some weeks later.
Stay healthy for now 🙂
